Furthermore, dermatological changes frequently present on the foot in older adults (Best Practice Statement, 2012). Skin and nail conditions can be a cause of distress and embarrassment due to their cosmetic appearance. Moreover, many of these skin and nail conditions can negatively impact on skin integrity increasing the risk of secondary complications including: 8 Tissue breakdown 8 Infection 8 Foot ulceration. Foot problems and inappropriate footwear are also associated with an increased risk of falling in older adults (Cockayne et al, 2014). Thus, a regular foot assessment is important to ensure the timely management of foot problems and prevention of complications.
